Rust just found on kudzu in southeast GA; several new spore finds

“Numerous pustules and copious spores” found on kudzu leaf in Decatur County, GA

6:45 p.m. CDT—Soybean rust was confirmed this afternoon on kudzu growing in extreme southern Decatur County, Georgia, near the Florida border. “Numerous pustules and copious spores” were found on one leaf in a kudzu patch only two miles south of a Georgia sentinel plot.

The same patch was scouted last week without rust being sighted. Georgia officials say the new finding today: “further strengthens our belief that rust has spread to some degree in the state. Growers in the Coastal Plain are advised to begin a fungicide program as the crop enters reproductive growth and reassess the spread of disease before making additional applications.”

More rust “look-alike” spores found in TN, KY this week

Two new reports of spores that look like soybean rust spores have come in:

  • In Tennessee, four more soybean rust look-alike spores were found in a spore trap near Winchester on Tuesday, July 19. This same trap in Franklin County had five spores last week.
  • Six rust-like spores were detected in a spore trap located in Caldwell County, Kentucky, on Tuesday July 19. The period of deposition for these spores was the afternoon of July 13 to the morning of July 18.

*The good news is that the USDA mobile rust scouting team didn’t find any new rust locations in Alabama yesterday (7/20), per Don Hershman.

  • A few more spores found in Franklin County, Tenn., spore trap
  • Hershman reports new KY spores, mobile team results in AL
