A soybean grower’s field in Hamilton County, Florida, is infected with Asian soybean rust – the first such find in a commercial field in the state. Officials confirmed the submitted sample with PCR testing on Tuesday, bringing to nine the Florida counties positive for rust in 2005. Officials there recommend that Florida growers with soybeans approaching bloom consider applying fungicides.

Rust was found yesterday in a sentinel plot in Elmore County, Alabama, in the east-central part of the state between Montgomery and Auburn. Ed Sikora, plant pathologist with Auburn University, said today the incidence in the plot was at 60 percent, although disease severity was relatively low in these R5-R6 stage soybeans. He also reports on how the rust in other known sites is progressing.
