Asian soybean rust sentinel plot scouting report: August 11-17

Sixteen reports were filed from the 20 soybean sentinel plots during the reporting week.
No soybean rust has been found on soybeans or other plants in Michigan or anywhere in the region, including Ontario, Canada.
Growth stage: Ranged between R4 and R7 with the majority of plots at R5.
Plant height: Ranged from 20 inches to 50 inches with eight plots at 36 inches.
Degree of canopy closure: Ranged between 83 and 100 percent with 14 plots between 95 and 100 percent.
Soybean diseases present: Four plots report no disease present. The remaining plots each report one or more diseases, the most common being Septoria brown spot (low incidence), downy mildew (low to high incidence), and bacterial blight (low incidence). There are scattered reports of Phytophthora stem canker, white mold and SCN.
Insects present: Six plots report no soybean aphids, four plots range between 1-30 per plant and six plots range between 200 and 625 per plant. Other insects noted in the plots were Japanese beetles, Western corn rootworm, Asian lady beetles and spider mites.
Dry beans: Common bacterial blight (Xanthomonas campestris pv. phaseoli)
Soybean: Twospotted spider mite, Downy mildew, Septoria
Sugar beet: Rhizoctonia
Thirty-three counties in five southern states have positive confirmation of soybean rust disease. South Carolina has just identified the first incidence of rust in the state and joins Florida, Georgia, Alabama and Mississippi with active soybean rust infections.
