Monsanto Reports Roundup Ready® Corn 2 Planted On More than 24 Million Acres in 2005

Pleased with benefits that include flexible weed control and excellent crop safety, growers planted the Roundup Ready® Corn 2 System on more than 24 million acres in 2005, a record level.

That represents nearly 30 percent of total U.S. corn planted this season, which the USDA reports to be 81.6 million acres. It also represents an increase of more than 40% over 2004 Roundup Ready Corn acreage of 17 million. One factor driving the brand’s growth is the recent approval of Roundup Ready Corn 2 for food and feed ingredients in the European Union (EU). EU approval opens up new markets for U.S. growers who are no longer required to channel grain from Roundup Ready Corn 2 single-trait hybrids.

According to John Jansen, Brand Marketing Manager, the rapid adoption of the Roundup Ready Corn 2 System also reflects its consistent performance benefits to growers, including unsurpassed weed control, outstanding crop safety and flexibility to manage around the weather.

“The Roundup Ready Corn 2 System easily adapts to the way growers currently farm,” Jansen said. “Its ease of use, allowing preemergence and postemergence programs, means the technology can be readily integrated into their farming operations. Growers also report that Roundup Ready Corn 2 simplifies their weed control system and delivers greater value than conventional corn hybrids.”

Jansen said growers can use the Roundup Ready Corn 2 System at a cost similar to a conventional herbicide program. He added that lowering the risk of crop injury as compared to other postemergence products has delivered an average 6.5 bushels per acre more than a conventional herbicide program over the past four seasons in field trials throughout the Corn Belt. This superior crop safety, combined with the fact that the Roundup Ready Corn System outyielded the conventional herbicide programs in 73 percent of the trials, translates into an average profit advantage of $12 per acre.

Reflecting these performance benefits, a 2004 year-end survey indicated grower satisfaction levels of 96 percent with the Roundup Ready Corn 2 System. This was the sixth consecutive year that the brand scored a satisfaction level in excess of 90 percent.
