Training event outlines proper ways to apply manure
Agronomy | January 18, 2006

Manure application can be an asset or a liability for livestock producers, depending on how it is handled. A training workshop for custom manure applicators interested in becoming certified and those who want to learn more about manure management practices will help them apply manure the right way.

The Certified Livestock Manager Training session takes place Feb. 1-2 at the Agricultural Center of Union County in Marysville, Ohio. Ohio State University Extension is a sponsoring partner.

Those who manage or handle manure at animal feeding facilities, or buy, sell or apply manure are invited to attend the training. Topics covered during the training session include nutrient management, manure storage and handling, emergency management planning, and manure handling rules and regulations.

Cost of the training session is $10 each day for Midwest Professional Nutrient Applicator Association members, and $20 per day for non-members.

For more information or to register, contact Kelly Harvey at the Ohio Department of Agriculture (ODA) at (614) 387-0908 or by e-mail at harvey@mail.agri.state.oh.us . Registration deadline is Monday (1/23).

To receive manure application licensing through the ODA, a producer or custom applicator must attend three “core” training sessions and three “elective” sessions. The Certified Livestock Managers Training session enables participants to complete all the training needed for initial certification. Managers need 10 hours of continuing education every three years to maintain certification.

Other sponsors of the training event include the ODA, Ohio Livestock Coalition, Ohio Department of Natural Resources, the Natural Resources Conservation Service and the Great Lakes Regional Water Quality Program.
