Important information growers need to know to maximize their corn production and improve safety on the farm will be shared at the Southwest Ohio Corn Growers Association Field Day. The field day takes place from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Aug. 16 at the Fayette County Demonstration Farm in Washington Courthouse, Ohio.

The event, sponsored by the Ohio Agricultural Research and Development Center (OARDC) and Ohio State University Extension, is free and open to the public.

The field day features corn hybrid plots, field demonstrations and a trade show. It also offers Ohio Department of Agriculture pesticide pickup, health screenings, and master gardener and farmer’s market displays.

Educational session topics and speakers include:

• “What Level of GPS (Global Positioning System) Technology Do You Need?” — Nathan Watermeier, OSU Extension.

• “Management of Transgenic Corn Hybrids” — Bob Nielsen, Purdue University Extension corn specialist.

• “Herbicide Programs for Roundup Ready Corn Hybrids” — Mark Loux, Ohio State Department of Horticulture and Crop Science.

• “Remote Sensing for Nitrogen Management” — Robert Mullen, Ohio State School of Environment and Natural Resources.

• “Grain Bin Safety Demonstration” — Josh Gatewood, Cargill AgHorizons Inc.

• “National Corn Growers Association (NCGA) Update/Corn Supply and Ethanol” — Leon Corzine, NCGA chairman.

• “Ohio Corn Growers Association (OCGA) Update” — Mark Drewes, OCGA president.

• Be sure and look at the Great Lakes new hybrids which are in the SWOGCA Plot (6311’s in there!)

Corn plot tours begin at 10 a.m. Field demonstrations start at 10 a.m., with buses running every half hour and returning every 15 minutes.

The Fayette County Demonstration Farm is located at 2770 State Route 38.
