On this sunny Tuesday morning, the weeds continue to grow and the wind continues to blow. At least it stopped gusting long enough to rain — some growers were lucky enough to have a good day on Sunday to spray if their fields were dry enough. But that was about it.
As you wait for the wind to slow down a little, get out in the fields and take notice of the type and size of weeds out there. Lambsquarter is proving to be a tough weed again this year. I am recommending growers look at a tank mix partner like Status or Callisto in corn if you had problems with this weed last year. There are many options available so make sure you check with your crop advisor to see what they are recommending. In beans I like Resource (not with Touchdown brands), Harmony or Synchrony. Again, I encourage you to talk to your advisor for recommendations and rates.
Another thing I would like to remind growers using glyphosates is to make sure you use the right rate for the weed height. I very rarely recommend a cut rate of glyphosate unless the only weed you are going after is grass. There are many “flavors” of glyphosate on the market today and each seems to come with its own recommended rate. I have put together a chart with the most common glyphosate acid/gallon concentrations and the rate for the corresponding weed height. All rates are rounded up to the nearest ounce. (I suppose I should make sure everyone in internet land knows these are my recommendations, but you should always read and follow the chemical label.)
| Common Names | Glystar Plus, Buccaneer Plus, Honcho Plus, etc. | Touchdown Total, Glyphomax XRT, Durango | Roundup WeatherMax, Roundup OriginalMax | Touchdown, HITech (needs surfactant added) |
| Glyphosate Acid/gallon | 3# | 4# | 4.5# | 5# |
| Up to 6" weeds | 32 oz. | 24 oz. | 22 oz. | 20 oz. |
| 6" to 9" weeds | 40 oz. | 30 oz. | 27 oz. | 24 oz. |
| 9" to 12" weeds | 47 oz. | 35 oz. | 32 oz. | 28 oz. |

Have a safe and productive week!

ANAHIEM, Calif. (DTN) — While a few companies will shoulder the brunt of criticism in upcoming discussions on the competitive climate — or lack of one — in agriculture, the reputation for all of agriculture may be at stake.

Editor’s Note: Dan Davidson provides insight into what farmers might do this spring to deal with wet soil conditions. The information was provided specifically to AgProfessional so that readers can talk with customers about alternative field work that might be necessary this spring and to allow consultants and ag retailers to determine recommendations for fertilizer programs fitting into a farmer’s unusual spring workload.
