  Thursday, August 16, is the date for the annual University of Illinois Agronomy Day. Presentation topics include bioenergy, continuous corn, foliar fungicides, insect control, weed management, and management of soybean cyst nematodes.

  Monitor fields carefully for both corn rootworm and Japanese beetle adults as corn tasseling begins. Before making any treatment decision, be sure to consider the principles of IPM.

  Several reports of ergot in wheat heads have been received from southwestern Illinois. Ergot can cause yield loss, but the primary concern is its toxicity to animals.
• Soybean Rust Scouting: Now Is the Time
  Soybean rust is actively progressing in Louisiana, Texas, and Mexico. As the crop enters late vegetative growth stages, start scouting at least weekly for rust in soybean fields.
• Can Foliar Fungicide Raise Corn Yield When There’s Little Disease?
  There is no way to predict when there might be a yield benefit from the use of a foliar fungicide in corn when there is not a disease present.
• Crop Conditions and What to Watch as Corn Enters Pollination
  The return of rainfall to most of Illinois has brought great benefit to the corn crop. Fields with uneven plant heights may experience problems with pollination and should be carefully watched regarding insect damage.
