I think there will be at least three events that 2007 will be remembered for in eastern Iowa: 1) sudden death syndrome in soybeans, 2) all the planes flying on fungicides for corn and insecticides for aphids on soybeans, and 3) all of the corn rootworm problems on rotated corn.

I have received a number of calls regarding the premature death of corn beginning at the top with leaves dying near the top of the corn plant as well as leaf death near the base of the plant while green leaves are still evident in the middle of the stalk near the ear.

The two primary concerns regarding feeding flood-damaged corn to cattle are soil contamination and microbial contamination.

Recent flooding in parts of Ohio, especially the NW counties, has caused major damage to many cornfields. In some river bottoms, corn was immersed up to the tassels.
