Hybrid Spotlight: 5055G3VT3
Agronomy | October 22, 2007

This week’s spotlight is on 5055G3VT3, a 100-day sleeper!

Product Manager Mitch Ray says, “If this hybrid didn’t have the competition from 4689 and 5416, we would consider it a true champion. 5055G3VT3 to date in our NET trials has an average yield of 186.4 bu. per acre from 79 comparisons and is averaging 5.3 bu. over the plot average. Pretty good data! And it’s also available as RR for a refuge hybrid.”

Here’s what the agronomists have to say about 5055:

Tex Young, Michigan/Ohio/Indiana

I like to see this hybrid placed on your better soils. It’s not the best performer is Western MI on the sands and variable soils. When on the better soil with good fertility, 5055 has a long, slender ear that packs on the kernels and has great yield potential. This hybrid should be kept to the North as a full to mid-season hybrid. If moving South into Indiana and Ohio for an early hybrid, 4689 would be a better choice. The plant is not overly tall and the silage data is average.

Tim Jordal, Wisconson/Illinois

  • Placement: 5055 is a consistent performer on most soils and tillage situations. 5055 has good leaf health allowing it to perform well as an early hybrid in the northern 2 tiers of counties of Illinois. It’s best performance is in southern and central Wisconsin
  • Place vs. Competitors: 5055 is very competitive vs. 98 – 103 day products from NK, Pioneer and DeKalb.
  • Strenghts: 5055 has very good leaf health, test weight, ear girth and length.
  • Weaknesses: Can show some root lodging. Late season stalks can be an issue in northern Illinois.

David Hoy: Iowa/South Dakota

5055 is the hybrid that delivers what it advertises. It is the 100 -day powerhouse. I’ve seen it out yield longer season competitors best hybrids. 5055 stands well and has nice plant health. It will dry down in the fall but might benefit from a fungicide application. It works well on no-till and corn-following-soybeans as well as corn-on-corn. Its plant type doesn’t lend itself to narrow rows. I like it on the better ground where it has the chance to yield like crazy. Keep it out of the sand pockets and knobs.
