ICIA: Soybean seed quality update
Agronomy | February 20, 2008

We are seeing poor soybean quality this year. The average germination in rolled towel is 91.5%, in sand 85.2%, and the cold test is averaging 85.4%.

Preliminary bin germinations should not be used as an indicator of final conditioned lot quality. While most bin results are in the 90’s, much of the bagged seed is falling into the 80’s and 70’s.
We are seeing a significant amount of mechanical damage this season. We are testing lots with 20-30% mechanical damage. A substantial amount of damage is occurring as the seed is taken from storage and moved through the conditioning tower. For best results, be as gentle as possible with the seed.

We suggest that you not treat your seed with a fungicide until you have an indication of your final conditioned germination score. Several seed companies have discovered their treated seed germinations in the bag are much lower than the untreated bin sample germination they have listed on the label.
