ISU: Corn Production Update
Agronomy | May 26, 2008

Much of Iowa’s corn acres were planted after the recommended planting window yet it is very possible that the most recent planting dates are the best for 2008 because of the cold and wet spring conditions.

Planting into marginal conditions this year could not be avoided though in some regions. As such, corn emergence issues have occupied and will continue to occupy much attention these next two weeks. Crusted soils, delayed emergence and/or poor seedbed conditions are increasing variability in seedling emergence and reducing final plant populations.

Three items related to the current status of the Iowa corn crop have been posted to the website:

  1. Full-Length Article: Corn emergence problems across Iowa
  2. Image Gallery: Photographs from several field visits this past week related to crusted soils and inhibited emergence=
