Recent storms have unloaded extraordinary amounts of rain in many parts of Iowa.
Soils are likely saturated; low lying areas of fields (tiled or not tiled) are covered with ponds; areas along streams and rivers are flooded. Corn seedlings with less than 6 leaves, can withstand 4 days under water if air temperatures are less than the high 70’s. If air temperatures are greater than that, seedlings may only survive for one day.
Two items related to the saturated soils and flooding of Iowa’s corn crop have been posted to the website:
1) News Item: Saturated and flooded corn fields
2) Image Gallery: Photographs related to saturated soils and flooding from several field visits today
