Hybrid Development Process

  1. Unique Genetics – Great Lakes Hybrids is a division of AgReliant Genetics, LLC, which provides one of the most extensive and unique germplasm sources in the world.
  2. Thorough Research – Each year, numerous new experimental lines are developed using both a unique double-haploid breathing process and traditional plant breeding methods to forward exciting new elite Great Lakes products for initial testing.
  3. Initial Testing – Initial testing of future Great Lakes hybrids takes place at Major Research Locations (replicated plots) located throughout the corn belt, where they are relentlessly tested and analyzed for possible promotion to the next stage of testing.
  4. Regional Performance Testing – New hybrids that show the greatest potential are advanced to New Experimental Trials (NET) and then Generations Ahead Plots (GAP), where additional attention is focused on performance reactions across various soils, environmental conditions, fertility levels and tillage practices – as well as overall traits and consistency.
  5. Widespread, Localized Plot Testing – The most promising hybrids are designated as Key Experimentals and promoted to further testing in Great Lakes and other independent tests throughout our market area. This final stage of testing involves comparisons against our top hybrids, as well as our competitors’ best products.
  6. Introduction of New Hybrids – Through localized testing, new, elite lines emerge each year. These new hybrids possess higher yield potential, better agronomic traits and greater value to farmers, compared to hybrids that were introduced only a few years earlier.
