Vast Genetic Base

Long-term breeding success depends on access to broad genetic variability. As a result of a long history in breeding and our worldwide breeding efforts, our genetic base is more diverse than the bases of almost all other competitors. 5961BTRR - Buckley, ILOur independent status allows our breeders maximum flexibility in breeding strategies. And, as we are not locked into a single biotechnology provider, we have the ability to combine the best available technology with our own highest-performing germplasm.

In 2005, our research program tested more than 500,000 breeder plots at more than 100 research sites throughout the Midwest. In 2006, the number of research plots is increasing even more.

Dr. Guenter Seitz with Haploids at PekinTo increase the speed and quality of our proprietary corn breeding efforts, we have aggressively developed internal research programs utilizing molecular markers, doubled-haploids and gene engineering, allowing more comprehensive and faster breeding implementation. Our research goals include reducing time for line development from 3-5 years to 1½ years, and speeding up GMO conversion to two years using our proprietary fast-track system.

With the recent issuing of patents for corn inbreds and hybrids, many other seed companies will no longer have complete access to competitive germplasm. That’s another reason to choose from the wide variety of proprietary hybrids that Great Lakes Hybrids has to offer.
