Dear Clint,

If you're behind in corn planting, or recovering from the weather, we look into each of these topics in this issue of our weekly agronomic newsletter.

Remember to check the
agronomy article archives, as we are posting about 20-30 new agronomic articles every week on the website.

If spring planting is on hold . . .

Flooded Corn

We're a week into May, and USDA's planting progress report this afternoon will probably indicate approximately half of the corn crop has been planted. . . at most.

All farmers know that yields will begin dropping this week on unplanted fields, about one bushel per acre per day for each day of delay beyond April 25. Until the leak in the sky is temporarily plugged, planting season will remain rather stressful for much of the Cornbelt, and production potential will diminish.

Some farmers have been lucky enough to finish corn planting and move into beans. Others have yet to pull the planter into the field. Visits with several crop production specialists provide a good analysis of how the crop is going to react to late planting and what we can expect from it at harvest.

Below are several university articles addressing this topic.

Potential insect issues
Wireworm

Insects are the next issue to be scouting for in the early planted fields.

Early Weed Control
Case sprayer This week, several articles have been posted about early weed control for corn. Here are the links to those stories:
